The game model is offering public and private financiers a secure way to invest in a portfolio of projects with a fixed exit price. The diversification model offers the possibility to invest on different platforms (Mobile, Facebook, Consoles). It also helps Game developers to buy back the IP at a fixed price if the game is successful within a time period.
The scheme was first developed in Copenhagen and the concept has been further developed and adapted for the Paris Video Games cluster to involve private investors
SPECIFIC GOALS
• To help Game developers to find finance for their projects
• To able Game developers to retain their IP if the project is successful
• To involve new investors by offering a diversified portfolio of projects
• To offer to investors a clear exit strategy with a fixed sales valuation of IP
MAIN NEEDS MET by the GP
• Avoid Game developers to lose their IP
• To bring investors in the game sector
• To finance projects instead of companies investments
• To create a clear valuation of assets created
• To attract public and private investors
• To increase the number of projects developed by VG clusters
TRANSFERABILITY AND SUCCESS FACTORS
The GP is easily replicable in other regions where a Video games cluster exist. The success factors are:
• Number of companies in the cluster to develop a portfolio big enough to be attractive
• Existence of local Business angels and venture capitalists
• Video Games companies able to develop high value video games on different platforms in a limited number of months
QUOTATION
” Involving private investors in the Video Game industry will require some adaptations in rewarding their investment but at the same time creating a fair balance for the creative development of the IP”
